Midway Vid
My friend Shamus made a short video of us at the Midway in Boston last weekend! This is a spontaneous version of “Red House” by Jimi Hendrix.
That’s Earl “The Pearl” Phenix on keys, Chris Sublette on bass and Matt Lydon on drums! Those of you in Shanghai will recognize Earl from the fall of 2009, when I brought him over to the House of Blues and Jazz. You might also recognize Chris from the second half of 2010, when he held down the bass chair for The Soulcasters!
Thanks to everyone who braved the arctic Boston winter temperatures to spend the evening with us. It was a great night! Earlier on we had some special guests sit in with us… James Houlahan (of Dogs on Television) and singer/songwriter Rebecca Muir graced us with their presence and talents.
This show was a nice warm up for our return show at Smoken Joe’s BBQ this Friday! Hope to see you there.
Send-off Show / Party!
Save the date!
June 18th, 9p – 1am, at Smoken Joe’s in Brighton Center, MA.
We’ll be having a big send-off party for the Soulcasters! The show will consist of performances by the Mike Null Blues Band, the Soulcasters, and Boston legnd, Toni Lynn Washington.. in addition to some special guests sitting in!
Hope to see you there!

As many of you know, I used to play here every Thursday with The Chicken Slacks, so I can vouch for what a lively scene this is. This is a great place to see live music! Get ready to get down and get into it! Bring your friends! Hope to see you there.
Seeking New Lineup for Shanghai
The Mike Null Blues Band is currently seeking musicians for a return trip to China.

We were asked back to the House of Blues and Jazz this July – September, and I’ll need a new lineup of players. It’s a long story, but in particular, I’m on the hunt for a great female singer to go with me.
Send me an e-mail if you want to go, or know someone who might, or to find out more information!
DVD Teaser
If you’re going to play in Shanghai for three months, you’ve gotta have something to show for it, right?!
While in China, I happened to meet a great guy named Ludwig Fella of Fella Film Studios. He filmed a typical Saturday night show and turned into a DVD! We’re still working out some kinks, but know that it will be available for purchase and download soon!
In the meantime, here’s a teaser clip:
Find this clip and a handful of other vids at my YouTube Channel.
For those of you in China with no access to YouTube (aka victims of the Great Firewall of China), please let me know of a good video hosting site to which I can upload the videos so you can see them!
We also got some great audio recordings of the shows and are in the process of editing and mixing a live album!
So what else? After taking a much needed break for the holidays, I am now beginning to book and play shows in and around the greater Boston area. You can find an up-to-the-minute list of places I’ll be playing on my calendar.
Lots goin’ on. Stay tuned!
Goodbye Present from Sofie
While I was playing at the House of Blues and Jazz in Shanghai, I managed to pick up a very talented young guitar student named Sofie.
You can see a video of her sitting in with us HERE. (She’s the one playing my telecaster)
Check out the wonderful goodbye present she made for the band and me.

A diorama of the band playing in Shanghai!
Check out some of the closeups:

- Me, up close. She even included the soul patch!

- Earl the Pearl, complete with red silk shirt and a lit cigarette!

- Steve Belleville with his hat and beard!

- Tony Hall, with signature necklace
Thank you, Sofie!! We will miss you. Hopefully see you in 2010!
Bootleg Footage
Hi all,
Check out this bootleg footage from the House of Blues and Jazz!
More videos to come! Stay tuned.
Review from Artonym.com
The Mike Null Blues Band was recently ranked No. 1 Best Live Music in Shanghai on Artonym.com!
Now to the stuff I like
1. House of Blues and Jazz: Straight in at number one.
I don’t know if I’m rating the venue or the band but who doesn’t like to watch boys soulfully strumming their guitars? And, as ZZ Top so eloquently put it: “Every girl is crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man.” Never mind the fact that I have a crush on three-quarters of the Mike Null Blues Band – the only one I’ve seen play – it’s the feel that they have for the music that is so easy to get on board with.
You go to some clubs and you feel that most of the acts have memorized all the cool riffs and you can almost make out the performers’ lips moving as the count down the notes till they can bust out their “spontaneous” solos. Mike Null and his band play the blues with feel. Like it’s what they’re about. It’s a little bit dirty too. Enough to make you think you probably wouldn’t want to be in the same room as your parents while you watch them play.
What they wear: Suits. Crisp. Sometimes shiny. Always smart.
What they sing: The promo stuff says blues, jazz and funk. Who am I to argue?
When they play: Tuesday to Sunday (till the end of November)
Thing I like the best: All of it. They are that good.
Thing I ‘m not such a big fan of: That they’re off soon.
Thanks, Iris! Hope to see you at a show again, soon!

First Review
“I have just come back from Shanghai and visited the famous JZ Jazz Club and also the trendy Brown Sugar BUT the best was to come on our last night. We hit the world famous House of Blues and Jazz and were treated to a world class performance from the Mike Null band. I was fortunate to hear and see them and also meet the band – a great bunch of guys and talented international musicians.”
– Alan Saks, House of Blues and Jazz patron from New Zealand
